The UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone of the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery and Petrochemicals Complex at Pachpadra in Barmer district of Rajasthan on 22 September 2013. The refinery being set up at an estimated cost of over 37 thousand crore rupees is expected to commence oil production in 2017-18. With an annual capacity of 90 lakh metric tons, the refinery will provide employment to one lakh 40 thousand people.
The refinery will be the first in the country to use indigenously produced crude oil. The refinery will prove revolutionary in Rajasthan's development.
With the setting up of this Refinery, Petro-chemical, Petro- engineering and other industries related to it will be set up. This will not only benefit this area but the whole of Rajasthan.
